Leprechaun Dance

The first graders have been learning a song called the "Leprechaun Dance". In this activity, there are gold pieces scattered around the room with body parts written on them, ranging from "eyebrow" to "feet". Each one is a different body part. The students sing the song and move around the room. When they get to a gold piece, they pick it up and then have to decide how to move that particular body part to the macrobeat (big beat) or the microbeat (little beat). This activity helps students differentiate between the macrobeat and the microbeat, and it helps them practice their body awareness. A skill that mature musicians possess is full awareness of their whole bodies. To develop body awareness, children need to identify their body parts as well as demonstrate how each body part works.
