In second grade, one of the things we learn about is folk dancing. Folk dances help students improve body awareness and coordination, connect movement to preparatory breath and singing, and refine beat competence. It also creates an environment of fun and promotes teamwork with classmates.
Our second graders just created their own folk dances! It took us a few weeks to learn all of the moves (12 of them), and then students got into small groups and picked which moves they wanted to include in their folk dance. We sang the folk song "Michigan I-O" while each group danced in front of their classmates. They all did a great job!
