Each month in Kindergarten, we learn a different Song Story. Students listen to one Song Story during every class until the end of the month, when they try to sing it. At the conclusion of the Song Story each day, students "catch" the resting tone in their hands and give it a smooth ride while I sing the song on neutral syllables. The resting tone is like home base, it's the most important note of the song. At the end of my singing, they sing the resting tone to see if it was still "trapped" in their hands. This helps reinforce their understanding of the tonal center of the song. Each of these songs helps to immerse the students in a variety of tonalities, meters, and styles. It also helps them on their journey of audiating music. Audiation is to music as thought is to language. A student who audiates music is able to identify and give meaning to music.
Below are videos of some of our Kindergarteners singing a portion of their Song Story from the month of May.
*Many of the KC students were not in music class on the day I filmed because it was the day of their zoo field trip.
