12 Bar Blues (3rd and 4th Grade)

Recently, the 3rd graders learned about the 12 Bar Blues. They learned to listen and identify the chords in the progression, then learned to sing the chord roots and chord function. Later, they started to improvise rhythms on the chord roots. After that, we improvised rhythms on the xylophones using the notes E (Do), A (Fa), and B (So).

The 4th graders learned the 12 Bar Blues last year. This year, their Multicolored Belt for Recorder Kung Fu was improvising rhythms on the chord roots of the 12 Bar Blues (on recorder).

In the video below, you will see the 3rd grade classes with some 4th grade guests all playing the 12 Bar Blues together. The 3rd graders are playing xylophones or singing, and the 4th graders are playing recorders. It was great for the 4th graders to demonstrate what the 3rd graders will be doing next year in music class!
