It's a New Year! Time to make some music!

We are back to school again after our two week break, and it's time to get back to music learning. The Holiday Program was great fun, but because we were working with the same three songs for awhile, it was a little difficult to keep learning new things.

Third grade students are working towards understanding how to audiate and identify meter. We now begin to compare meters (partial synthesis) and play with meters. We change duple meter songs into triple meter songs and vice versa. We also begin to read and write rhythm notation (symbolic association).

Students are also working to understand how to audiate and identify tonality. We being to play with tonality in a variety of ways too. We change songs from major tonality to minor tonality and vice versa. We begin to look at tonal patterns in notation. Lastly, we will take all of this information we’ve learned about tonality, meter, and melody and compose our first piece of music in small groups.

The students will start to understand how to audiate chords within music. We continue to reinforce and practice hearing and identifying chord changes. We will focus on tonic, dominant, and subdominant chords this year. We continue to accompany our songs on tone bar instruments.

All of this learning is achieved through fast-paced classroom activities, where we sing, chant, or play a variety of short songs in many different meters and tonalities.
